The 2024 Weiwuying International Music Festival: A Diverse Soundscape Across Contemporary and Classical

The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) annually hosts the Weiwuying International Music Festival each April, spotlighting the dynamic energy of Taiwan’s music scene and the endless potential of contemporary music. In 2024, the festival is led by Unsuk CHIN, one of Asia’s most celebrated female composers, promising to assemble world-class musicians and orchestras. From 12 – 21 Apr, attendees can look forward to seven ticketed programmes and two complimentary events, seamlessly integrating innovation with tradition and transcending the confines of musical genres.

The 2024 Weiwuying International Music Festival promises a rich tapestry of musical elements, including percussion, classical music, cutting-edge technology, visual arts, and Sprechgesang. Highlighted performers feature violinist William WEI, pianists Sunwook KIM and Mei Yi FOO, cellist Zlatomir FUNG (winner of the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition), soprano Sumi HWANG, percussionist Marianna BEDNARSKA, and saxophonist CHEN Li-fong. Esteemed conductors like CHIEN Wen-pin, Pascal ROPHÉ, Hankyeol YOON (the latest Karajan Award for Young Conductors recipient), and Pierre-André VALADE will guide performances by the National Taiwan Symphony, the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra, the Ensemble TIMF, and the Weiwuying Contemporary Music Ensemble.

Furthermore, the festival will host two free screenings dedicated to Hungarian contemporary music legend Péter EÖTVÖS and German visual artist Gerhard RICHTER. These events are designed to acquaint audiences with two illustrious artists, heralding a new era of cross-disciplinary musical innovation.
