A Decade of Opera at Weiwuying

Since its planning began in 2015, Weiwuying has established itself as a hub for opera production in Taiwan. Over the past decade, it has staged 15 productions with 20 international theatres and groups. With the involvement of over 4,000 performers and backstage professionals, these productions have reached and inspired more than 100,000 audience members, making Weiwuying a potent force in opera for Taiwan. 

Ten years ago, Weiwuying worked with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein on a production of PUCCINI’s Turandot, for which the director, stage designer, costume designer, and new-media designer were all Taiwanese. Its premiere at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein’s Theatre Duisburg was widely acclaimed, marking the first time Taiwanese opera professionals took the spotlight on the international opera scene. This signified Weiwuying’s first step into the opera world. 

In 2025, Weiwuying has decided to celebrate its ten-year milestone in the realm of opera with an iconic gesamtkunstwerk (a piece of art that incorporates many kinds of art) – WAGNER’s Lohengrin, as it continues to embed opera more firmly in Taiwan, foster the advancement of the local opera industry, broaden audience engagements and strengthen Taiwan’s capacity in the genre.
