Suntory Hall (Minato-ku, Tokyo / President: Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi) will celebrate its 40th Anniversary in 2026.
Since opening on 12 Oct 1986 as Tokyo’s first purpose-built concert hall, Suntory Hall has been guided by the founding philosophy of “in pursuit of the world’s most beautiful sound.” Over the past four decades, the Hall has presented original, high-quality concert programmes and educational initiatives dedicated to nurturing musical culture and passing it on to future generations, while also fostering meaningful public engagement. Widely esteemed by artists and music lovers alike in Japan and around the world, Suntory Hall has hosted more than 21,000 concerts since its opening and welcomed over 23.04 million visitors as of Oct 2025.
Suntory Hall will mark its 40th anniversary with an extensive programme of activities over 11 months from 1 Apr 2026 to 28 Feb 2027. Since its opening in 1986, the Hall has nurtured music by world-class artists together with music-loving audiences. On that stage, in that blessed moment, the brilliance of life is embodied by everyone together. Reflecting this spirit, the guiding theme of Suntory Hall’s 40th anniversary is “Moments that Shape the Future.” Inspired by this concept, the anniversary logo is built around the Hall’s emblem, derived from the Chinese character 響 (Hibiki), with the “40th” motif designed to gesture toward the future.
During its 40th season, Suntory Hall will present a variety of commemoratives concerts such as the chamber music festival Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden, celebrating its 15th anniversary, the revival of the highly-regarded original Hall Opera® production of Tan Dun’s TEA: A Mirror of Soul, and the annual Suntory Hall Summer Festival of contemporary music, which has been held since 1987. Highlights of the anniversary season will also include the 40th Anniversary Gala Concert, the central event of the celebrations, and Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan 2026 led by Maestro Riccardo Muti, who will celebrate his 85th birthday in the same year. In addition, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra & Suntory Hall Subscription Concert for Children series, the first initiative of its kind in Japan, will reach its landmark 100th performance in Dec 2026.
Furthermore, the anniversary season signals the beginning of a new phase of development, with an emphasis on nurturing the next generation of performers through the Suntory Hall Academies (Opera and Chamber Music). Alongside the concerts that are presented/co-presented by Suntory Hall, a selection of carefully curated Partner Concerts will be incorporated to the 40th anniversary season line-up.
