Tongyeong Festival Orchestra European Tour
Happy Birthday, Isang Yun!
The 100th anniversary of Isang Yun offers a great opportunity, but also a formidable challenge for Tongyeong Festival Orchestra – Tongyeong’s cultural ambassador. Its 2017 European tour gives the orchestra the chance to perform in Europe for the first time; it enables Tongyeong International Music Foundation to present Isang Yun’s music on a prominent international platform; and it is a wonderful opportunity to carry the flag of Tongyeong and make the city known abroad. Several magazines and newspapers in Europe have reported on Tongyeong International Music Festival during past years; now the time has come for an even greater public exposure, the time to make a lasting impression.

Tongyeong Festival Orchestra will assemble in mid-September for rehearsals in Korea and a first performance of the tour repertoire in Tongyeong. Due to health concerns, conductor Heinz Holliger (a longtime friend and supporter of Isang Yun and today maybe the most prominent performer of Yun´s music) will only conduct the orchestra on tour. Instead of Holliger, British conductor Stefan Asbury will jump in, preparing the orchestra for this great task, and conducting a performance in Tongyeong right before the musicians board the plane. Besides Holliger and Asbury, Korean violinist Clara Jumi Kang (2013 Tongyeong International Music Festival Artist in Residence) will perform in all of the concerts.

Lufthansa German Airlines has kindly supported the tour and will take the orchestra from Incheon to Dusseldorf in Germany. After that, the musicians will travel by bus and by train through six cities in four countries, before returning to Korea.
