West Kowloon Cultural District, the Xiqu Centre, opens!

The Xiqu Centre witnessed a vibrant Stage Dedication in Dec 2018. In accordance with xiqu customs, the Xiqu Centre invited The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong to perform two specially selected auspicious ritual plays — Birthday of the God of Venus and Prime Minister of Six States at the Grand Theatre on 30 Dec 2018.

The ceremony completed with the traditional lion dance, roast pig-cutting and “Gong” officiation with distinguished guests including Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the HKSAR.

Following the Stage Dedication, the Xiqu Centre hosted a week of free events in its Grand Theatre, Tea House Theatre, Atrium and Seminar Hall as part of the celebration.

On 20 Jan 2019, Mrs Carrie Lam and Mr Henry Tang, Chairman of WKCDA Board, officiated at the unveiling ceremony that marked the grand opening of the Xiqu Centre. The ceremony was followed by ten performances of The Reincarnation of Red Plum under the artistic direction of legendary Cantonese opera veteran Dr Pak Suet-sin.

The Xiqu Centre’s mission is to conserve, promote and develop the art of Xiqu. In addition to inviting local and international troupes, the Centre is also dedicated to nurturing a new generation of xiqu stars. The Tea House Rising Stars Troupe performs regularly in the Tea House Theatre to introduce new audiences to xiqu. The troupe comprises a handpicked group of actors and musicians, performing a 90-minute showcase that demonstrates a range of vocal and musical styles, with a moderator to explain the art form’s history and cultural significance.

The Xiqu Centre also offers the perfect environment for visitors of all ages and backgrounds to explore and learn about different regional forms of xiqu. The Xiqu Centre regularly hosts guided tours, talks, workshops and the D.H. Chen Foundation – West Kowloon Tea House Student Matinees, introducing younger audiences to the traditional arts.

The second performing arts centre of West Kowloon Cultural District, Freespace is scheduled to open later this year. Freespace is Hong Kong’s new centre for contemporary performance. The public is invited to freely explore, encounter and be inspired by new artistic experiences through innovative programming across all genres. A black box theatre inside Freespace will provide a flexible performance space. There is also a livehouse where local and international live music will be presented in a bar and café environment. Freespace sits next to the Art Park’s great lawn, where an outdoor stage can be set up for large-scale events and festivals. Follow the Freespace Facebook Page to learn more about the opening!
