TIMF Academy 2022 with Klangforum Wien, Ensemble TIMF and composers Michael Jarrell and Unsuk Chin
The TIMF Academy 2022 will be held at Tongyeong Concert Hall from 29 August to 3 September.
Launched in 2005, the TIMF Academy began as a collaboration with Ensemble Modern, Germany’s world-class contemporary music ensemble. TIMF Academy is an educational program selecting talented musicians from Korea and Asia to study in a variety of curricula under the guidance of renowned international instructors. Along with joint projects in Bangkok, Thailand; Paris, France; and Vienna, Austria, TIMF academy has established itself as one of Korea´s leading music education projects.

For this year’s TIMF Academy, 27 composers among 85 applicants are selected as participants by Unsuk Chin, the world-renowned composer and Artistic Director of Tongyeong International Music Festival. Masterclasses will be given to the participants by Unsuk Chin, and also by the prominent Swiss composer, Michael Jarrell.

New compositions by six of the participants were commissioned by TIMF and will be premiered during the Academy by Klangforum Wien and Ensemble TIMF conducted by Emilio Pomarico. Compositions by four participants are also selected for the Reading Sessions: rehearsals and discussions with members of Klangforum Wien and Ensemble TIMF.
Founded by Beat Furrer in 1985, Klangforum Wien is a contemporary music ensemble comprised of the world’s finest soloists. With more than 80 performances annually worldwide, the 24-member ensemble can be seen throughout Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. Klangforum Wien has its own annual concert series at the Wiener Konzerthaus. Every year, the ensemble commissions composers and gives numerous world and territorial premieres. Honorary members of Klangforum Wien are Friedrich Cerha, Sylvain Cambreling, and Beat Furrer.
Ensemble TIMF was founded in 2001 with the goal of incepting a major performance ensemble as a key representative of Korea and an ambassador of the Tongyeong International Music Festival. The ensemble’s intense activities reach markets not only in Korea but also in foreign countries, and their excellence has been recognised internationally. They have performed at various festivals such as the Darmstadt International Contemporary Music Festival, the Warsaw Autumn Festival, the Venice Biennale, the Klara Festival in Belgium, the Beijing Contemporary Music Festival and the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Emilio Pomàrico, conductor and composer, is one of today’s leading interpreters of contemporary music. He is regularly engaged by the most important European music festivals such as the Festival d’Automne in Paris, the Salzburg Festival, and the Donaueschingen Festival. Important New Music groups have also worked with Pomàrico: among them, Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, ensemble recherche in Freiburg, Ensemble Contrechamps in Geneva, Klangforum in Vienna, and Nieuw Ensemble in Amsterdam. As a composer he has also collaborated with Klangforum in Vienna, the Asko-Schoenberg ensemble, Ensemble musikFabrik, Remix Ensemble, ensemble intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, ensemble recherche, and Ensemble Resonanz.
Michael Jarrell is a Swiss composer and academic teacher. His works have received numerous prizes: prix Acanthes (1983), Beethovenpreis from the city of Bonn (1986), Marescotti prize (1986), Gaudeamus (1988), Henriette Renié (1988), Siemens-Förderungspreis (1990), Musikpreis der Stadt Wien (2010), Swiss Music Prize (2019) and Prince Pierre of Monaco Music Composition Prize (2021). Beginning in 1993, he became professor of composition at the University in Vienna. In 2001, he was named “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres”. In 2004, he was named professor of composition at the Geneva Conservatory.

Unsuk Chin is a Korean composer. Her works have received prizes such as Grawemeyer Award (2004), Arnold Schoenberg prize (2005), Prince Pierre Foundation Music Award (2010), Wihuri Sibelius Prize (2017), Kravis Prize (2018), Léonie Sonning Music Prize (2021). Her Works has been performed by worldwide by major orchestras, contemporary music ensembles and interpreters: conductors Kent Nagano, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Gustavo Dudamel, Simon Rattle, Myung-Whun Chung and Bavarian State Opera, Berlin Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Radio France Philharmonic, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Modern and others.
