Standing boldly within the precinct, HOTA Gallery on Australia’s Gold Coast is a trailblazer full of wonder, discovery and creation. It’s filled with multiple ideas and an unfolding experience of viewpoints that challenge us to dig deeper and get lost in creative ideas.

It’s little wonder then, that the visually stunning, two-year-old gallery has become a flagship attraction as part of the new super entity, Experience Gold Coast, which sees five City entities merge into one.

Driven by the City of Gold Coast, Experience Gold Coast will showcase the city as Australia’s premier tourism and lifestyle destination, the home of major events, a preferred place to study and a city that values and celebrates arts and cultural experiences. As the fastest-growing regional city in Australia, the Gold Coast has a proud reputation for creating and delivering unforgettable visitor experiences and a voice that has a presence on the world stage.

It’s an exciting time to come on board, and HOTA Gallery’s new Director Susi Muddiman OAM is ready for the challenge. Susi’s experience leading Tweed Regional Gallery makes her ideally positioned to lead HOTA Gallery into this exciting new phase.

Susi takes the reins just as an Australian exclusive exhibition from the Design Museum of London opens for the summer. As the first design exhibition to take up residence in the coveted Gallery 1 space, Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street charts the design and cultural journey of sneakers. The exclusive exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to discover the footwear phenomenon that’s challenged performance design, inspired subcultures, and shaken the world of fashion.

From trainers originally designed for specific athletic activities like the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star, the Puma Disc, and Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next%, visitors can discover how sneakers like the Reebok InstaPump Fury, the Vans Half Cab, and the Asics Gel Lyte III have become cultural symbols of our times.

Visitors will take a journey through the design process behind today’s most inventive shoes, a brand using blockchain certification, and the world’s first biologically active shoes developed by MIT Design Lab and Biorealize for Puma. Delve into the lucrative resale market that’s currently valued at $10 billion, before reliving the high-fashion reinvention of sneakers by Balenciaga, Comme des Garçons, and Y-3 and runway looks from A-COLD-WALL* and CRAIG GREEN.

Uncover the icons and collaborations that have shaped the sneaker scene over the years from Michael Jordan to Run-DMC, experience visuals and graphic work, and discover the designers working to make the industry more sustainable.
