To become an Inclusive Theatre, the National Theater & Concert Hall Launches 2020 TIFA Easy Read Program

In its 12th year this 2020, the National Theater and Concert Hall’s (NTCH) Taiwan International Festival of Arts (TIFA) continues to promote its vision of “Arts for All” through various designed programmes and activities. NTCH has invested more resources to promote equal rights and accessibility services in recent years to become a more inclusive theatre. 

As a sophisticated international arts centre that serves as a benchmark for cultural equality in Taiwan, NTCH continues to optimise existing services throughout TIFA.  The implemented services include audio descriptions, childcare services, and Chinese captioning for pre-performance talks and post-performance discussions. This year, Easy Read versions of the TIFA program is available for the first time, providing accessible information to all.  The Easy Read program was designed in partnership with a team of Easy Read specialists and several social welfare groups in Taiwan. Editorial meetings were held to ensure that intellectually challenged youths were able to comprehend the information presented. Users who work in related service sectors were also invited to participate in the discussion, allowing NTCH to gain a well-rounded understanding of user needs.

Accessibility services provide various ways for everyone to participate in the performing arts. “The design of the Easy Read program provides the mentally and physically challenged individuals an equal opportunity to access information,” LIU Yi-ruu, Executive and Artistic Director of the NTCH, explained, “Through accessible information, everyone is able to participate socially and therefore exercise their right to make decisions for themselves. The reason why NTCH promotes equal rights and inclusivity is to allow different people to take part in a shared experience. NTCH strives to be a theatre for all and a meeting point for all. Inclusivity will always be our priority.”
