Puan Zaiton Binti Md Desa – Director General of Istana Budaya

Puan Zaiton Binti Md Desa was recently appointed as Director General of Istana Budaya on 1 July 2020. Born on 20 October 1961 at Kuala Kurau, Perak, Puan Zaiton Binti Md Desa graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in literature.

Puan Zaiton Binti Md Desa started her career with the government in 1986 as Culture Officer in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Malaysia and she has served in various divisions since. She has attended numerous courses involving the performing arts, within and even outside the country which involves the management and development of the performing arts industry. She has represented Malaysia at the IFFACCA Mini Summit on the Support of Major Performing Arts Organisations in Adelaide, Australia in 2008.

Today, the performing arts industry is faced with massive challenges especially with the current situation regarding the COVI-19 pandemic that has caused great distress not just in Malaysia, but also throughout the world. Istana Budaya is Malaysia’s main venue for local and international theatre performances staging musical theatre from drama to comedy and concerts from classical to pop. Apart from just being a venue, Istana Budaya provides quality entertainment to the public which preserves the local arts and culture in accordance with the National Culture Policy.

As the Director General, Puan Zaiton Binti Md Desa is determined to elevate the status of traditional arts and prevent the form from becoming extinct. This must be done to keep the country’s heritage alive and to preserve it for future generations. She hopes that the arts industry will be able to support the country by contributing to the growth of the economy and finances of Malaysia.
