ISANGYUN Competition 2021: 2-Week Quarantine will be paid by TIMF
The International ISANGYUN Competition 2021 will be held in public at Tongyeong Concert Hall from 30 October – 7 November 2021.
Alternating annually between the disciplines Piano, Violin and Violoncello, this year’s violin competition has attracted 103 applicants from 24 countries. And 26 competitors from 12 countries were selected by the preliminary round jury and were announced as the first round competitors.
The jury for the first, second and final round will comprise Namyun Kim (Chairperson), Shmuel Ashkenasi, Choon Soo Chung, Boris Garlitsky, Lena Neudauer, Lucie Robert, David Schultheiss, Takashi Shimizu, and Tianwa Yang.
The final round of this year’s competition will be led by conductor Dmitry Sitkovetsky with the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra.
For the competitors from foreign countries, the mandatory 2-Week Quarantine will be paid by Tongyeong International Music Foundation. All the competitors are obliged to submit his/her negative COVID-19 (PCR) test result issued within 7 days before the first day of his/her arrival to Tongyeong.

The International ISANGYUN Competition has been presented by the Tongyeong International Music Foundation since 2003. It is held in remembrance of Isang Yun (1917~1995), the renowned Korean composer, by promoting cultural exchanges among nations through music, and by supporting talented young musicians from all over the world.
The First prize winner of the last Violin Competition in 2017 was Ji Won Song (Korea).
TIMF Academy with Unsuk Chin, Johannes Kalitzke, Ensemble Modern and Ensemble TIMF
Launched in 2005, the TIMF Academy began as a collaboration with Ensemble Modern, Germany’s world-class contemporary music ensemble. TIMF Academy is an educational program selecting talented musicians from Korea and Asia to study in a variety of curriculums under the guidance of renowned international instructors. Along with joint projects in Bangkok, Thailand; Paris, France; and Vienna, Austria, TIMF Academy has established itself as one of Korea´s leading music education projects.
For this year’s TIMF Academy, from 4 – 8 October 2021, 14 composers among 122 applicants are selected as participants by Unsuk Chin, the world-renowned composer and Artistic Director designate of Tongyeong International Music Festival. Master classes will be given to the participants by Unsuk Chin, and also by the prominent German composer and conductor, Johannes Kalitzke.

New compositions by five of the participants were commissioned by TIMF, and will be premiered during the Academy by Ensemble Modern and Ensemble TIMF conducted by Johannes Kalitzke. Compositions by four participants are also selected for the Reading Sessions: rehearsals and discussions with members of Ensemble Modern and Ensemble TIMF.
