AAPPAC Singapore 2022: Future Forward – Conference Registrations Open in Mid-July!

Join us for the 25th Conference of the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centres (AAPPAC)! The AAPPAC 2022 Singapore Conference taking place on 19 – 21 Oct 2022 and will hosted by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay as well as partner venues in the city. This will be the very first time the conference will take on a hybrid format and there will be plenty to watch out for regardless of whether you are joining us in-person on online!

Future Forward
In these complex and uncertain times when countless lives and industries around the world have been upended, what is the way forward for the arts? This conference is an opportunity to gather and explore new considerations and possibilities for arts centres and artists. Through invigorating panels, discussions and presentations, AAPPAC delegates will consider future directions from the viewpoints and practices of interdisciplinarity and creative leadership, inclusivity and access, as well as sustainability.
This hybrid event consists of live gatherings held across multiple venues in Singapore’s diverse arts landscape, as well as virtual components. Join us in one of Southeast Asia’s most vibrant cities, or from wherever you are, as we reflect on the paths ahead for artistic creation and presentation at this crucial juncture.
Programme Highlights
Keynote Presentation: Notes From The Future
How do we envision the arts for tomorrow, and what are its most pressing issues and opportunities? Two Singapore artists of international repute, from different artistic fields and generations, share their strategies and advice for periods of uncertainty and transition.
Keynote Speakers:
- Margaret Leng Tan, Pianist and leading figure in experimental music (Singapore / New York)
- Shubigi Rao, Artist and Curator (Singapore)
Panel Discussions
- Creative Leadership in Interdisciplinary Performance
The intersections of different areas of knowledge are more complex and crucial than ever within cultural dynamism. With many new interdisciplinary fields of study emerging in recent years, what are the new modes, practices and perspectives within art making and engagement which have emerged?
- 360̊ Inclusivity: Dismantling Barriers to Accessing the Arts
Speakers representing different demographics on access – from disability arts to arts for seniors to theatre for young audiences – discuss how to empower and enable communities through the arts. How can we do so holistically to make a difference?
- Sustainability: Expanding Solutions for our World
Mapping out a sustainable ecosystem for the arts is a matter of increasing urgency. This panel aims to ignite fresh thinking on funding and philanthropy, income streams, audience development and distribution. It also seeks to expand solutions for sustainability in the cultural sector to include climate and green issues.
Connecting Series – Pitch Session
The AAPPAC Connecting Series is an opportunity for artists, artist managers, programmers, and presenters to share ideas on potential partnerships with AAPPAC member-centres and Business Circle members through the development and presentation of new work. The intent is to connect the network through partnerships; providing a platform for touring, producing and commissioning between members, with key outcomes of a greater longevity for work and increase exposure for artists.
In line with out Conference theme Future Forward, this year’s Connecting Series will prioritise submissions that display themes of:
- Creative leadership in interdisciplinary performance
- Inclusivity, social engagement & diversity
- Sustainability
The call for submissions will start from Mid-July!
Breakout Discussions
Facilitated by representatives from our very own AAPPAC members, both online and in-person delegates would be able to choose from a range of topics and delve deep into their area of your interest in these smaller group discussions.
Venue and Studio Tours (in-person only)
In-person delegates will get a chance to go on exclusive tours of some of Singapore’s leading performance spaces including Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Singapore Chinese Cultural Centres, and The Star Performing Arts Centre. Studio tours to Stamford Arts Centre and Aliwal Arts Centre will also give delegates a chance to get to know the local artist community and the spaces in which they work and create in.

Captioning and Translation will be made available in English, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, and Korean for all key sessions via the Online Conference Platform.
Conference passes will be made available to AAPPAC Members for purchase from Mid-July 2022 via Eventbrite.
