Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS Presents Exciting Concerts in the Second Quarter of 2024

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), located in the middle of the PETRONAS Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur, will present exciting concerts from Mar to May 2024, celebrating music excellence and embracing the vibrancy of all music genres that grace the stage. 

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will present the traditional tunes of ‘keroncong’ and ‘ghazal’ on 2 Mar. Themed Simfoni Budaya, the concert will be helmed by conductor Ahmad Muriz Che Rose and will feature legendary singer Dato’ Yusni Hamid together with young artists Haziq Rosebi and Asmidar. The combination of the singers will showcase the synergy of the two generations in ensuring the traditional legacy lives on. Among the gems to be performed are Sayang Di Sayang, Bisikan Hati, Penawar Rindu and Sri Mersing, in an extraordinary celebration at the crossroads of cultures. 

Next, the MPO will present a specially curated selection of successful classical-pop crossovers in a concert themed The Classics in Pops on 16 Mar. Resident Conductor Gerard Salonga will lead the concert which offers a good introduction to those with a keen interest in this genre. With a relaxing music and melodious arrangements, sit back and enjoy familiar compositions which achieved classical pop status due to their uniqueness such as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Grieg’s In The Hall of Mountain King, Dvorak’s Symphony No.9 (‘New World’), Stravinsky’s The Firebird and Hisaishi’s Medley: Spirited Away.  

Renowned maestro Rossen Gergov will lead the MPO to present a concert for classical music enthusiasts on 23 Mar. The concert will open with Glinka’s Russlan And Ludmilla Overture, followed by Zubitsky’s Omaggio ad Astor Piazzolla which will feature Ukrainian accordion player Alexander Hrustevich. One of the best bayanists in the world, he has performed all around the globe including Russia, Italy and Brazil. The programme closes with Dvorak’s grandeur Symphony No.7.

The month of March closes with a concert themed Heroes And Rascals by the MPO on 30 Mar. Valencia-born conductor Roberto Forés Veses will weave his baton on the orchestra in an exciting programme; curtain raiser Mozart’s Symphony No.32 followed by Brahms’ gypsy-inspired Hungarian Dances and Beethoven’s mighty Symphony No.3 (nicknamed ‘Eroica’).

DFP will next present a concert by the MPO under the leadership of Japanese conductor Junichi Hirokami. In the first half, the MPO will perform Schumann’s Cello Concerto and will collaborate with renowned Austrian cellist Kian Soltani, hailed by The Times as a ‘remarkable cellist’. The MPO will close the concert with Bruckner’s magnificent Symphony No.6. The concert is slated to be on 20 Apr.

An MPO family-themed concert is scheduled for 4 May. Presenter/narrator Alasdair Malloy returns to the hall in a musical journey with the MPO themed Mission Earth, discovering the wonders of nature, the weather and animals. Young Malaysian conductor Jebat Kee will lead the MPO in this interactive ecology themed concert.

Local singing sensation Aina Abdul makes her debut on the DFP stage with the MPO on 11 May. The MPO will give fresh symphonic interpretations of her hits such as Puas Sudah, Semalam, Sesal, Kamu, Kejam, Imaji, Bilang and Terus Hidup, complemented with her powerful vocals. Ahmad Muriz Che Rose will lead the MPO in a showcase celebrating the pop music of Malaysia.
