Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan 2026

Daiwa Securities Group Presents Riccardo Muti conducts Wiener Philharmoniker

7-12 Nov 2026

Suntory Hall hosts Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan 2026 in Nov.

Founded in 1842, the Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic) has been closely associated with the rich musical history and tradition of Vienna, the capital city of music. As one of the world’s finest orchestras, it continues to enthrall audiences all over the world with its unique, luscious sound. The orchestra first visited Japan in 1956, and this year marks the orchestra’s 41st tour to our country.

Suntory Hall has been hosting Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan since 1999, giving Japanese audiences a regular opportunity to enjoy this distinguished orchestra. This year, marking the 40th anniversary of the opening of Suntory Hall and the 70th anniversary of the Wiener Philharmoniker’s first tour of Japan, Suntory Hall welcomes Riccardo Muti to the podium, a maestro who has collaborated with the Wiener Philharmoniker for 55 years. Muti and the orchestra last performed together in Suntory Hall in 2021.

On this tour, Muti and the Wiener Philharmoniker will present three orchestral programmes which include two works that were originally premiered by the orchestra. Brahms’s well-loved Symphony No. 2 in D Major, premiered by the Wiener Philharmoniker in 1877, is paired with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in the same key (6 Nov). Also, a work premiered by the orchestra in 1892 is Bruckner’s magnificent Symphony No. 8, which will be performed in the Haas edition (9, 12 Nov). Meanwhile, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 — a work particularly close to Muti’s heart—is combined with Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Symphony No. 4 (8 Nov). In every programme, you will enjoy the perfect rapport between Muti and the Wiener Philharmoniker.

As in previous years, there are education and outreach events: a free open rehearsal (8 Nov) for students and Suntory Hall Members Club, an instrumental master class by horn player Wolfgang Vladár  (10 Nov), and a school programme aimed at junior high/high school students (7 Nov). Also, 90 youth tickets (from junior high school students to 25-year-olds) will be available for the concert on 8 Nov. Both the Wiener Philharmoniker and Suntory Hall are committed to giving young people the opportunity to experience performances of the highest standard.

In addition to the four concerts at Suntory Hall, the orchestra will tour Takasaki (Gunma), Nagoya, and Osaka.

The Wiener Philharmoniker has built close ties with Japan, and after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the orchestra offered a donation of one million euros to help people recover from the disaster. The Suntory Group matched the amount and set up the “Vienna Philharmonic and Suntory Music Aid Fund”, which continues to provide support through music in the Tohoku region as well as in Kumamoto and Noto. In 2025, musicians visited Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture, an area affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and further music exchange programmes are being planned for this year’s visit.
