SDAC Works on the Road

SDAC’s acclaimed work White Snake went on the road again in March and April this year for a three-city tour of Australia. It was featured at Tasmania’s Ten Days on the Island Festival, the Hurtsville Entertainment Centre in Sydney and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane. White Snake is the famous myth of a young man who falls in love with a magical white snake that has captured imaginations for centuries. This version turns the classic, ‘love-knows-no-bounds’ tale into a sumptuous visual experience of performance, music, art, song and costume.

Another physical theatre work by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, a co-production with internationally acclaimed physical theatre company Gecko, will have its European premiere at the Pleasance in Scotland as part of Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Dreamer is an original story inspired by the dreams written by William Shakespeare and his Chinese contemporary Tang Xianzu, blending emotionally driven movement, a spine-tingling sound scape and striking visual storytelling to bring a new twist to these classic texts. Performed by a Chinese cast, the season runs from 2 to 15 Aug.

Lu Xun Blossoms, the first co-production between Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre and Theatre Smith-Gilmour (Canada), reinvents the works of Lu Xun, one of the most important modern Chinese writers, into an enchanting theatre performance. Since its premiere in 2007, Lu Xun Blossoms has toured to wide acclaim to over 40 countries and territories such as China, Canada, and Germany.

This time it will be performed as a part of Singapore M1 Chinese Theatre Festival in The Theatre Practice physical theatre from 24 to 27 Aug.

SDAC New Venues

SDAC has added two new sites to its management lineup of performance venues over the last six months.

Shanghai International Dance Center Grand Theatre

In Oct 2016, the Shanghai International Dance Center was opened on Hongqiao road in Changning District, Shanghai. Dedicated to the art form of dance, it is a multifunctional art complex, which includes a 1000-seat grand theatre, a nearly 300-seat studio theatre, the Shanghai School of Dance, the headquarters of Shanghai Ballet, the Shanghai Song & Dance Ensemble and rehearsal studios. Programming for the two theatres is managed by a dedicated team from Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre.

In Mar 2017, soft launch of New Shanghai Theatre marked the rebirth of 74 years old historic Shanghai Theatre on Fuxing road. Blending old and new architectural style, the building has been transformed into a modern performance venue dedicated to contemporary theatre and performing arts.

These two new venues are added to our existing roster of versatile world-class performance spaces including Arts Theatre, Drama Salon and Studio D6 at Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre on Anfu road and Sky Theatre and Micro Theatre at 1933.
