Black Box Chinese Opera Festival 2025 

The eighth edition of the Black Box Chinese Opera Festival (11 – 26 Oct) will present original productions offering new perspectives on a heritage art form. Devised and adapted for the modern stage, each work will showcase bold experimentation and a contemporary sensibility through a range of regional genres and styles. This year’s programme will feature the Xiqu Centre’s three award-winning Cantonese opera productions – Farewell My Concubine (New Adaptation), Wenguang Explores the Valley and The Imperial Decree – along with two acclaimed Kunqu operas, Qingshan Embrace Me by the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe and The Burning Painting by the Yangju Opera Institute of Yangzhou and Jiangsu Drama and Literature Creation Institute.

Freespace Jazz Fest 2025 

WestK’s flagship annual music event, the beloved Freespace Jazz Fest will return for its seventh edition from 6 – 9 Nov. This year, the festival will continue to bring together a dynamic mix of local and international artists across styles in curated programmes across WestK, immersing audiences in the pulse of jazz, pop and folk music. Details of the lineups, programmes and ticket sales for the music festival will be announced in due course.

WestK Performing Arts x HKYAF: Miller Performing Arts – Likes & Lies 

Likes & Lies, this year’s flagship youth musical production co-presented and co-produced by WestK and Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation (HKYAF), will be showcased from 13 – 15 Nov at The Box, Freespace. Performed by young Hong Kong performers aged 9 to 25, written and directed by Lindsey McAlister, founder of HKYAF, and with original music by multi-disciplinary artist Amuer Calderon, Likes & Lies will navigate the complexities of friendship and romance in the digital age and tackle issues around online integrity.

Freespace Dance 2025 

Freespace Dance 2025 (20 Nov – 6 Dec) will bring together artists from Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region to collectively reimagine the future landscape of dance. Through avant-garde cross-cultural, cross-media and cross-disciplinary works, artists will explore how dance may evolve in response to cultural, socio-political, technological and environmental shifts. 

Highlight performances include four exciting, new cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaborations – a WestK Performing Arts commissioned and internationally co-produced work, Building a Bridge (working title) by performance collectives TS Crew (Hong Kong) and contact Gonzo (Osaka), No Time To Die: An Inert Liquid Assembly by visual artist Nadim Abbas (Hong Kong) and choreographer Chan Wai-lok (Hong Kong), U>N>I>T>E>D by contemporary dance company Chunky Move (Melbourne) with experimental music duo Gabber Modus Operandi and costume creators Future Loundry (Bali), and Jungle by Korea National Contemporary Dance Company.
