Cyrano de Bergerac: A Cantonese Opera Interpretation 

Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) and National Arts Council, Singapore are proud to present Cyrano de Bergerac: A Cantonese Opera Interpretation, a traditional Chinese opera production inspired by the French classic of the same name and crafted by renowned Hong Kong opera star, Dr. Law Kar Ying.

First presented at Hong Kong Chinese Opera Festival 2024, the production will be re-adapted and staged in Singapore for the first time on 18 and 19 Apr, at SCCC Auditorium. Featuring Dr. Law as the dedicated hero, Zhu Bufan (Cyrano in the original play) and Singapore’s Winsome Chan as the lovely Princess Xu Qishan (Roxane in the original play), the story follows a charming yet self-conscious poet who writes passionate letters to the woman he loves on behalf of his handsome but tongue-tied sworn brother.  

The production marks SCCC’s first international collaboration for traditional Chinese opera and brings together talented opera practitioners from local Cantonese opera troupe OperaWorks (Singapore) and Dr. Law’s troupe from Hong Kong, Tai Kwan Ying Opera Troupe.

Cultural Extravaganza 2026

SCCC’s annual flagship festival, Cultural Extravaganza, returns from 7 May – 7 Jun to showcase the best of local Chinese arts and cultural offerings! Featuring original works by TOY Factory, The TENG Ensemble, Siaw-Tao Seal Carving, Calligraphy & Painting Society, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra and more, the festival promises refreshing and innovative takes on Singapore Chinese culture. 

Festival highlights include: 

• Master White Dragon – a comedy theatre play by TOY Factory. The production is Cultural Medallion and Singapore Chinese Culture Contribution Award recipient Goh Boon Teck’s newest theatrical offering and melds street cons with journalistic justice, incense-burning faith with awakening conscience.
   
• Land Below the Winds – a special exhibition by Siaw-Tao Chinese Seal Carving, Calligraphy and Painting Society. The exhibition features works from the society’s members covering a wide range of subjects inspired by Southeast Asia’s flora and fauna, human interactions, daily scenes, and even profound historical and cultural memories.
   
• The Cycle of Grace – a music and dance performance by The TENG Ensemble and Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre. This cross-disciplinary production explores the ideas, values, and virtues associated with each of the Eight Graces, reinterpreted through contemporary artistic expressions, and reintroduces the graces in ways that highlight their enduring relevance in contemporary life. 
   
• Moonlit Lovers of the Durian Grove – an original laughter-filled musical comedy that weaves together frontstage and backstage antics in a play within a play.  It features a group of passionate amateur performers writing and staging a forbidden love story set in durian plantations and featuring feuding families, a mysterious ghost, a magical spirit and an outrageous wedding.

Cultural Playground: Tunes & Tales 

SCCC’s inaugural children’s festival, Cultural Playground, will be held during the June school holidays, from 19 – 21 Jun. Created for families with children below 12, the festival brings together local arts groups and educators to present performances, interactive workshops, and family-friendly programmes in Mandarin. 

Through hands-on activities and engaging experiences, Cultural Playground invites children and parents to experience Singapore Chinese culture and language in engaging and joyful ways, transforming both culture and language from something taught in classrooms into experiences that can be enjoyed together as a family. 

Festival highlights include a puppetry performance by Paper Monkey Theatre inspired by the story of Nezha, nursery rhyme performances by The Theatre Practice, sonic workshops for infants by SAtheCollective, and storytelling-cum-baking workshops by Brookiekids.
