Chinese New Year Concert

To bring in the Year of the Dog, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Adelaide Festival Centre will present a concert that unites cultures through the power of music in a Chinese New Year Concert, on 18 Feb in the Festival Theatre.

The concert of popular masterworks and traditional Chinese favourites is performed by artists from China: Muhai Tang, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tianjin Opera and Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Shanghai Philharmonic and Zhenjiang Symphony Orchestras and pianist sensation Warren Lee in his Adelaide debut.

Also on the programme is the Australian Premiere of a specially commissioned cross-cultural work, Rooster Fanfare which premiered at the historic AFL Port Adelaide match in Shanghai in May 2017. Written by Australian composer, Sean O’Boyle is a musical representation of the coming together of Australian and Chinese cultures and features the talents of Australian didgeridoo virtuoso, William Barton plus the Shanghai Empireast Culture Group.

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) Managing Director Vincent Ciccarello said, “This is set to be a beautiful concert that unites cultures through the power of music, since its inception in 1936, the ASO has played a significant role in the cultural life of South Australia. ASO is an organisation that prides itself on recognising and celebrating diversity, we look forward to a night where the community can connect and learn through music the celebration of Chinese New Year”.
