Music Offerings at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), located in the middle of the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers, welcomes the new year with a host of fabulous concerts.

January will commence with a celebration of the commemoration of Leonard Bernstein’s centennial this year with a glittering programme by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO). It presents the music from the composer’s timeless Broadway compositions from West Side Story, Candide, Peter Pan and Wonderful Town. Teddy Abrams will weave magic with the MPO in concerts featuring New York based singer/songwriter Morgan James. Set the dates with the MPO on 6 and 7 Jan.

MPO’s tribute continues the following week in concerts themed Bernstein At 100 with conductor Eiji Oue leading the orchestra through the composer’s symphonic works. American pianist Conrad Tao returns to mesmerise audiences with his magic fingers, after his debut on the stage in 2016. The concerts are scheduled on 12 and 13 Jan.

Tao will next present a recital on 14 Jan to present his beautiful piano works.

Renowned conductor Kazuki Yamada presents concerts themed Poetic Inspiration: Manfred in Music on 20 and 21 Jan. He will bring audiences through an exciting repertoire comprising works by Schumann, Strauss and Tchaikovsky.

Organist Joseph Nolan will hold a recital on 23 Jan, presenting much loved works.

Nolan will next collaborate with the MPO on 26 and 27 Jan, presenting Poulenc’s intimate organ works, with Adrian Leaper conducting at the podium.

MPO’ third installment of its Ballet Festival comes next; Tchaikovsky Spectacular is scheduled from 2 to 4 Feb, followed by 9 to 11 Feb the week after.

Conductor Karen Durgaryan will lead the MPO and the Ballet of Armenia will debut on the DFP stage.

Russian Stanislav Kochanovsky leads the MPO in concerts themed Grandeur And Triumph on 24 and 25 Feb. Symphonic German masterpieces by Wagner and Mahler will dazzle.

Kochanovsky will continue to helm the concerts in March, themed Russian Bells And Eugene Onegin with vocalists Tatiana Pavlovskaya, Irina Shishkova, Pavel Cernoch, Alexey Markov and the Kuala Lumpur City Opera Chorus to astound the audience. The concerts are scheduled on 3 and 4 Mar.

Next comes concerts themed From Lyricism To Triumph on 9 and 10 Mar. Under the baton of Polish conductor Michal Nesterowicz, the MPO will present works by Beethoven, Shostakovich and Polish composer Kilar. Malaysian pianist Bobby Chen returns to the DFP stage.

Chen will then hold a recital on 11 Mar, presenting beautiful piano works not to be missed.

Tatiana Pavlovskaya

Guitarist and flamenco legend Juan Manrel Canizares will hold a recital on 15 Mar before the MPO takes its audience on a musical trip to Spain on 16 and 17 Mar. David Gimenez presents flamenco-infused works, of unrequited Andalusian love and haunting beauty while Canizares seduces with his inimitable musicianship.

The Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra takes centrestage on 18 Mar,  led by Naohisa Furusawa.

The MPO returns with its family-themed concerts on 25 Mar with popular presenter Alasdair Malloy helming. The MPO performs side-by-side with the MPYO in these exciting concerts themed Adventures in the Magical Kingdom.

Mozart in Prague is the last offering by the MPO in this month where Australian maestro Benjamin Northey leads the orchestra. The concerts will feature another Malaysian pianist, Loo Bang Hean, who will enthrall piano music lovers with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.2.
