2019 Taiwan International Festival of Arts (TIFA)

Ten years ago, the National Theater and Concert Hall (NTCH) launched the Taiwan International Festival of Arts (TIFA) for the first time to introduce Taiwanese  audience to global trends through performing arts and to showcase the local creative energy on an international stage. NTCH continues to strive toward this goal and  hope to take the intensity up a notch. With leading tastes and artistic foresight, they aim to build TIFA as one of the most important annual arts festivals, and make it the most anticipated arts event in early spring!

The year of 2019 marks the 11th edition of TIFA. In celebration of such a new starting point, they are redefining TIFA as an art festival full of “Talent” and “Inspiration” to be shared by all. By showcasing rich and exquisite art creations, the festival leads the audiences to perceive the global arts with “Foresight” and brings “Amazing” experiences to each of the participants! Eventually, TIFA, as an art festival, will successfully transform itself from a window for displaying art visions to a platform for the exchanges between artists and audiences.

As the most joyful festival in the beginning of every year, TIFA is not only the feast for art enthusiasts but also an arts festival that offers enjoyment to everybody. From 19 brilliant programmes brought forth by domestic and international performing arts groups to a series of diversified and rich peripheral activities, they hope to share with more people the values of the art festival and to use the common imagination to unite a diverse audience. Everybody will find a reason to walk into NTCH and be deeply moved by the experience.

Some Taiwanese creations are the highlight of this edition: Huang Yi presents a choreographic piece A Million Miles Away, joint commissioned by three National Theaters of Taiwan. Lee Chen-Wei, former dancer of Batsheva Dance Company brings her experimental creation kNOwn Face. Su Wei-Chia of HORSE Dance presents the new version of FreeSteps – NiNi in the open space around the NTCH. Tora Hsu and playwriter Chien Li-Ying’s The Possible Memoirs of a Traitor returns to the NTCH and takes the big stage. Mythology Upon the Table: Baboo Liao invites 6 Asian actors to talk about the mythology of their culture over a meal. In his new dance piece 22° Lunar Halo, Cheng Tsung-Lung draws on this natural phenomenon to explore the themes of human anxieties, struggles, desires and love.
