Hiyas Hila, piano; Maestro Yoshikazu Fukumura, conductor

Concert pianist Hiyas Hila returns to CCP as a soloist for the PPO’s 36th season. Hailed for “mastery of the keyboard”, Hila has been featured in concerts in the United States, Spain and the Philippines.

2. PPO OUTREACH CONCERT

The PPO moves out of the symphony hall into the open atrium of the Philippine General Hospital to perform for patients, caregivers, doctors and staff of the hospital. The annual concert restores to instrumental music its affiliation with the healing arts.

TamásVásáry, piano/conductor

Hungarian pianist and conductor TamásVásáry conducts the PPO. Vásáry served as artistic director of the Northern Sinfonia from 1979 till 1982 where he recorded Chopin piano concertos, directing from the keyboard.

Ray Wang, cello; Yoshikazu Fukumura, conductor

International cellist and renowned music teacher, Ray Wang returns to the CCP stage as he performs with the PPO for its 36th season. Wang has performed in musical centres and festivals in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. His performances have also taken him to Chicago, Cremona and Florence, among others. Wang also serves as a music faculty member of the Baptist University and Chinese University of Hong Kong, among the many schools and universities he has taught at.

1. THE PHILIPPINE MADRIGAL SINGERS – SEASON CONCERT I

The Philippine Madrigal Singers enchant in an evening of European classics, Pilipino originals and pop selections interpreted in their winning style and virtuosity.  Organised in 1963 by National Artist Professor Andrea O. Veneracion, the choir is one of the world’s most awarded, having consistently won all the top prizes in the world’s prestigious choral competitions: Arezzo and Gorizia in Italy, Marktoberdorf in Germany, Spittal in Austria, Neuchatel in Switzerland, Tours in France, Varna in Bulgaria, Debrecen in Hungary, Cantonigros, Tolosa and Torrevieja in Spain. The Philippine Madrigal Singers hold the distinction of being the first choir in the world to win the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing twice in 1997 and then in 2007.

2. BALLET PHILIPPINES’ “ROMEO AND JULIET”

Shakespeare’s tale of young love and familial conflict told in dance. Choreographed by National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes, to the music of Prokofiev and production design of National Artist Salvador Bernal. Romeo and Juliet tells the timeless tale of star-crossed lovers caught in between the crossfire of their powerful warring families. Experience love and dance with ballet Philippines.

3. BALLET PHILIPPINES’ “TALES OF THE MANUVU”

22-24 and 29-31 March 2019

“NoongUnangPanahon”…This iconic song about how far the gap between heaven and earth has widened, nature has become less benign, and goodwill among men has disappeared came from BP’s original modern ballet Tales of the Manuvu.

Choreographed and directed by Alice Reyes, tales based on the retelling of the origin myths of the Manuvu. National Artist for Literature Bien Lumbera wrote the script and lyrics for the music of NonongPedero while Broadway theatre designer Loy Arcenas creates all-new sets. Do not miss this entertainingly clever take on the enmity between the gods of good and evil, the creation of man and his empowerment.

4. TANGHALANG PILIPINO’S “CORIOLANUS”

22-24 February; 1-3, 8-10 and 15-17 March 2019

The rarely staged Shakespeare play about a legendary Roman soldier turned tyrant is translated into Pilipino by Guelan Luarca and directed by film director Carlos Siguion-Reyna.

5. PASINAYA 15: KARAPATAN, KALAYAAN, KULTURA (RIGHTS, FREEDOM AND CULTURE)

The largest multi-arts festival celebrates its 15th edition by expanding to three days of workshops, performances, exhibits, street events, and museum tours. More than 3,000 artists participate from music, theatre, dance, spoken word, and visual arts. Audiences experience hands on workshops, exhibits and film screenings. Attended by more than 80,000 audiences, the Pasinaya Open House Festival transforms the venues of the CCP into the most creative place in the country. In partnership with the Museum Foundation, shuttle vans are provided to enable audiences to visit participating museums and galleries in Pasay and Manila.

Anino Shadow Play Collective

The Anino Shadowplay Collective leads in the innovation and reinvention of shadow play techniques like the Pilipino carillo, the Indonesian wayangkulit and other puppetry forms in bringing stories to the light.  BakasBagtasBukas exhibits the group’s “tools of the trade” in staging the tales of love, life, and community.

7. INDAK PILIPINAS

Folkloric dance troupes and music ensembles from the Philippines and abroad gather for a cultural extravaganza. On its 2nd year, Indak Pilipinas coincides with the celebration of the 70th Founding Anniversary of Philippine Folk Dance Society and the 50th Anniversary of the CCP. It would showcase the best folkloric groups and their best dance pieces choreographed and staged by Philippine National Artists for Dance and other respected personalities in the dance world to celebrate  the diversity of the Philippine dance traditions.
