Tongyeong International Music Festival 2019: Destiny

Destiny is a word that weighs heavily. We think of tragedy, greatness. Of perfection, but also of failing and disaster. Of the inevitable. It is all or nothing – Destiny knows no in between, and we cannot control it. Destiny makes us realise that there is something greater than man – and this is what we want to search for in the music of this year´s Tongyeong International Music Festival, held at Tongyeong Concert Hall in South Korea from 29 Mar to 7 Apr.

Among the great number of performances is the Asian premiere of Hosokawa´s Futari Shizuka- Maiden from the Sea – a dramatic revival of an ancient Noh play in a modern day Mediterranean refuge context. Besides the opera, great deal of other contemporary music will be presented, including two premieres of composer-in-Residence Jakub Jankowski from Adelaide, Australia. Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Korean Symphony Orchestra from Seoul, and Tongyeong Festival Orchestra will be performing music of Yun, Holliger and Berg besides some classical heavyweights such as Don Quixote (Mischa Maisky) and Wagner´s Walkre. All that in the spectacular oceanfront setting of Tongyeong Concert Hall. If you should get tired of destiny symphonies and fateful operas, visit the nearby Cherry Blossom Festival or seek respite in the hundreds of local oyster and seafood restaurants.
