Music Extravaganza at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) strive to elevate the arts and culture landscape of Kuala Lumpur in their 21^st season with a host of dazzling concerts.

April commences with MPO’s concerts themed Mozart’s Opera Arias on 6 and 7 Apr. To be led by Resident Conductor Naohisa Furusawa, MPO will perform Mozart’s famed opera works from Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute, with the assistance of soprano Ang Mei Foong and baritone Mak Chi Hoe.

The MPO will pay homage to the video games music from Final Fantasy on 12 and 13 Apr, after its successful presentations of such in 2012 and 2014. Award-winning conductor Arnie Roth returns to the DFP podium to lead the MPO and Dithyrambic Singers.

Next, celebrate the joy of music merged with the youthful exuberance of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) in a concert themed Seeds of Artistry on 14 Apr under the direction of Resident Conductor Gerard Salonga.

The MPO returns to dazzle the classical music fans with 20^th century masterpieces under the baton of renowned Roberto Abbado on 20 and 21 Apr. The concerts will witness the debut of magnetic violinist Ryu Goto on the DFP stage. He has rapidly established himself as Japan’s ambassador in classical music.

A familiar face to the DFP audience, British conductor Mark Wigglesworth will lead the MPO to present Mahler’s majestic Symphony No.9 on 27 and 28 Apr. Enjoy this beautiful ode to life, imbued with fragile joy and dramatic lyricism.

The month of May opens with the return of conductor Junichi Hirokami to DFP after his debut with the MPO in 2000. Themed The Dollar Symphony, the concerts will present works by Akutagawa, Atterberg and Grieg, scheduled on 4 and 5 May.

Conductor Jessica Gethin returns to conduct MPO this month after their collaboration last year. She will lead the Family Fun Day concerts themed Tutus, Tiaras And Toads on 12 May. The concerts will feature works from ballet favourites such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty, much to the audience’s delight.

MPO will next present concerts themed French Impressions with an exciting programme of some of the most atmospheric works ever written by Ravel and Debussy, on 18 and 19 May. German conductor Hans Graf will be at the helm for these presentations.

Fresh from the well-received The Music of Hans Zimmer concerts last year, MPO continues the presentation of such series, this time with The Music of James Horner on 25 and 26 May. Conductor Anthony Weeden will lead the MPO and transport the audience to the music realm of movies such as Star Trek, Avatar and Titanic.
