The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre

The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre hosts a year-long free and diverse programme of events including exhibitions, lectures, art installations and forums to engage with the community on topics ranging from human rights, science, arts, environment and more.

This time of the year features another impressive lineup of prominent speakers, including TV Presenter Matthew Evans and renowned sociologist and design expert Professor Adrian Franklin.

University of South Australia’s Professor Adrian Franklin will present the second presentation in the Hawke Centre’s Perspectives series – a new initiative developed by The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, ACE Open and Guildhouse. This series presents thought-provoking lectures and invites leading artists, makers and cultural thinkers to Adelaide to engage with compelling ideas currently shaping our world.

Arts and cultural tourism academic Adrian Franklin will introduce the concept of the anti-museum, document its conceptual history since the eighteenth century, and identify its increasing relevance and presence to contemporary art today.

Former food critic and chef, now farmer and restaurateur Matthew Evans is set to launch his book, On Eating Meat. The book grapples with the thorny issues around the ways we produce and consume animals. Ultimately Evans is calling for less radicalisation, greater understanding and transparency, and for ethical omnivores to stand up for the welfare of animals and farmers alike.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an Australia-wide competition celebrating the research undertaken by PhD candidates. In this session PhD candidates communicate their research using 1 slide, and non-technical language in three minutes.

The 2019 UniSA 3MT® Grand Final, is presented in partnership with The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre. The event promises to be an exciting evening of research, entertainment and networking.

At home among Adelaide’s West End contemporary art scene The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre’s Kerry Packer Civic Gallery offers a vibrant exhibition programme, showcasing up and coming local talent, as well as international rising stars. Upcoming highlights include: Illusion, Art by Prisoners and an exhibition with Tutti Arts – an organisation dedicated to promoting the development of artists with a learning or intellectual disability.

In this exhibition that traverses both Nexus Arts Gallery and the Kerry Packer Civic Gallery, visual artists Elyas Alavi, Avan Anwar and Sha Sarwari’s practices consider conflict, displacement, news headlines and empathy as broad international concepts, while commenting on personal, cultural and collective experiences within an Australian context.

Art by Prisoners comprises artwork created by people incarcerated in South Australia’s adult prisons. The works offer glimpses into the pain, isolation, and regret often experienced as a result of crime and punishment.
