Celebrating HKCC’s 30th Anniversary

The year of 2019 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC), a remarkable milestone in its storied history. At the core of our celebration is our commitment To Celebrate, To Connect, To Create, with a broad spectrum of events organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, our venue partners and other local and overseas performing arts group from now until December 2019. 

Since its inauguration on 8 Nov 1989, the HKCC has been a premier arts centre which marked a new era in the development of the performing arts in Hong Kong. Located on the magnificent Victoria Harbour, the HKCC offers a dynamic environment for arts talents and showcases an array of programmes for the public. It houses a 2020-seat Concert Hall, 1734-seat Grand Theatre and a Studio Theatre with a capacity up to 496 seats, as well as other supporting facilities include the outdoor piazza and exhibition areas.

Over the years, the HKCC has established an artistic connection between Hong Kong and the world, offering numerous spectacular performances and events by outstanding arts groups and artists from Hong Kong and beyond. Standing on a prime waterfront promenade, the HKCC’s outdoor piazza is a famous spot for various dynamic functions, including the New Year Eve Countdown, the International Chinese New Year Night Parade and the Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival.

The Centre celebrates its 30th Anniversary this November. To commemorate this significant anniversary, a rich array of over 40 electrifying celebratory programmes will be staged from now until December 2019.

Nobody but a Princess by phase 7

To give music lovers a few special treats, we are proud to have renowned names around the globe including the London Symphony Orchestra, Renée Fleming, Anne-Sophie Mutter as well as Sir András Schiff and Cappella Andrea Barca.

Other celebration programmes, covering a wide range of genres, including XENOS by Akram Khan Company, Coco Chanel co-produced by Jo Strømgren Kompani and Ulrike Quade Company, The Dance Dome by 4πProductions and Coreo Cymru, Autumn Sonata composed by Sebastian Fagerlund, Nobody but a Princess by phase 7, Nuhikun by A Laboratory Play of Ban’yu Inryoku, Verdi’s Rigoletto by Opera Hong Kong, and The Imperial Emperor of Heaven Holding Court by the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong, promise to provide tremendous and captivating arts experiences that delight and inspire audiences.

In addition to overseas art groups, HKCC’s four venue partners, namely the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong Ballet and Zuni Icosahedron, will contribute an exciting assortment of programmes. Other major arts groups and artists, namely Hong Kong Association of Choral Societies, KJ Wong, four accomplished choreographers including Mui Cheuk Yin, Yuri Ng, Dick Wong and Daniel Yeung, as well as four of the Hong Kong’s finest pianists, namely Nancy Loo, Eva Lue, Gabriel Kwok and Tam Ka-kit, will also stage their highlighted productions at the Centre.

To bring together all our old friends and members of public for celebration and sharing the joy and fun, HKCC will organise a fun day on 9 Nov, the day after the official opening date of the HKCC, offering free performances, activities and walking tours at the foyer, piazza areas as well as the behind-the-scene spaces in the Centre.
