NTCH launches ARTQUAKE in Autumn Festival

Over the last decade, with the popularity of mobile devices and fast connectivity on social media, the Internet has become an important domain and medium for following and participating in social public affairs. However, does the Internet give us more freedom? Or do the algorithms actually restrict our perspective, reinforce our existing belief and make real dialogue difficult?

First held in 2021, the ARTQUAKE in Autumn festival seeks to serve as a space that emphasises the dialogue between creative works and contemporary society. A theatre is not only a place for unilaterally displaying aesthetic images and exploring aesthetic imagination, but it is also a place for stimulating audiences to receive more subtle opinions and information from their own life experience through the unique experiences in the theatre. It allows for audiences to further contemplate and investigate different voices and aspects. The self-awareness thus produced is called “change,” which is also the core essence of the ARTQUAKE in Autumn: “Act of Tomorrow.”

From 14 October through 5 December, a total of seven programmes onsite and online will be presented at the 2021 ARTQUAKE in Autumn, respectively exploring the issues concerning Taiwan’s local society and global values as a whole. This includes cyber bullying, verbal abuse, political powers, AI technology, gambling culture, social movements, and critique of class.

Some of the new commissioned works are: The Forgotten, a physical theatre by Riverbed Theatre, inspired by an incident in 1984 which cost the lives of 289 coal miners; A Gambling World III: Day and Day by Approaching Theatre and Step Out (Macau) depicts how gamblers challenge the fate and enjoy the pain in pleasures, and to try to break through the restraints of reincarnation for freedom; Wang Chia-ming’s R3: The Remix Edition, a recreation of his hugely successful work R3 —The Life and Death of Richard III in 2015, aims to echo the contemporary politics in Taiwan with the tale of Richard III, exploring questions such as “What is history?” and “What is truth?”

ARTQUAKE in Autumn is a festival that enables audiences to transform themselves from spectators to participants in discussions and other roles, and meanwhile enables the debate of real issues to continue, creating the possibility of all voices being equal. Multiple dialogues will be organised along the programmess, including pre-show talks, podcasts, post-show conversations through Slido, and themed talks etc.
