Tongyeong International Music Festival 2022 – “Vision in Diversity”
Tongyeong International Music Festival (TIMF) celebrates its 20th Anniversary. With its theme Vision in Diversity, the Festival also inaugurates the new Artistic Director, Unsuk Chin, the prominent composer whose Second Violin Concerto had its world premiere recently in London, performed by Leonidas Kavakos and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

TIMF 2022 is scheduled from 25 March 2022 until 3 April 2022, in the Tongyeong Concert Hall. On the opening day, there will be the Asian Premiere of Andrew Norman‘s Play: Level 1 (2013/2016), by Tongyeong Festival Orchestra and the Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska. There will also be the Asian Premieres on the same day, of Harry Partch‘s Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) and Daphne of the Dunes (1958/68) by the PARTCH Ensemble.

The Artist-in-Residence of the TIMF 2022, Truls Mørk, is the Norwegian virtuoso and one of the pre-eminent cellists of our time, who performs with the most distinguished orchestras and conductors. Also a great champion of contemporary music, Truls Mørk has given in excess of 30 premieres.

During the Festival, Truls Mørk will give his performances of Dvořák Cello Concerto with the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra conducted by Dalia Stasevska, and Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 with K’ARTS Sinfonietta conducted by Christoph Poppen, as well as the recital with the Korean pianist HieYon Choi.
The Composer in Residence of the TIMF 2022, Andrew Norman, is hailed as “one of the most gifted and respected composers of his generation” by the New York Times. He has been awarded with the Grawemeyer Award (2017), the Rome Prize (2006), and the Berlin Prize (2009). His work has been commissioned and performed by the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, etc.
Seven pieces by Andrew Norman will be performed during the Festival: Play: Level 1 (2013/2016), Spiral (2018), Unstuck (2008), An Index of Peculiar Strokes (2011), Try (2011), Sabina for string orchestra (2020) and Garden of Follies for oboe and piano (2006). The performers will be the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra, Ensemble TIMF, K’ARTS Sinfonietta, Novus Quartet, etc.
Many other world-famous artists will give performances during the TIMF 2022: Dezső Ránki, Magdalena Kožená, Kwangchul Youn, La Voce Strumentale with Julia Lezhneva, The King’s Singers, KBS Symphony Orchestra with Yubeen Kim, Svetlin Roussev and Tedi Papavrami, Veits Quintet and Chaeyoung Park, Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, Korean Chamber Orchestra, Gyeonggi Sinawi Orchestra, Jae Hong Park, Heemoon Lee etc.
