Summer Events at Taiwan’s National Theater & Concert Hall

Taiwan’s National Theater & Concert Hall (NTCH) is gearing up for an energetic summer season in 2022, the highlights of which include a special Pan-Asian producers’ camp, a summer jazz programme, and inclusive arts events for all ages.  

Asia Connection: Producers Camp (ACPC)  

Asia Connection: Producers Camp (ACPC) – a collaborative project by Taiwan’s National Theater & Concert Hall (NTCH), Singapore’s Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay, South Korea’s National Theater of Korea, and Japan’s Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre – is a four-week online training program in which participating producers take part in workshops and listen to talks from ACPC mentors. This year’s 14 participants, who hail from seven countries in the Asia-Pacific region, will have the opportunity to pitch their works to an international panel on 21 September. The panel will select the most promising projects to receive funding and material support from ACPC to bring them to fruition. Select lectures from ACPC mentors and the final online pitch session will be open for viewing. Further details will be available at the website link below.

NTCH Summer Jazz Series – 20th Anniversary  

The NTCH Summer Jazz Series, now in its 20th year, features annual concerts by the world’s major jazz luminaries and Taiwan’s top artists. The series culminates in an outdoor show featuring pop and jazz artists on the grounds of the NTCH, which attracts 10,000 people every year. This year’s programme focuses on four themes: the mystique and mythology of trains in American jazz and its offshoots (Jazz on Track), the work of Miles Davis (Miles’ Brew), Taiwanese contemporary jazz composers (Summer Jazz Outdoor Party), and celebrating Taiwanese jazz venues (Jazz in Da House).

NTCH Summer Jazz Series – 20th Anniversary

Intergenerational Seminar: Performing Arts Practices 

The NTCH is hosting Intergenerational Seminar: Performing Arts Practices, part of a series of workshops and activities designed to bring older adults and youth together. The seminar features talks by Natasha Gilmore, the founder and artistic director of UK’s Barrowland Ballet, and Naoki Sugawara, founder of Japan’s OiBokkeShi. The seminar is held under an NTCH programme originally started in 2015 for older adults. This year, the programme expanded to cater to both older adults and youth, bringing them together for three other events: to discuss performances from this year’s Taiwan International Festival of Arts; to take part in workshops on drama, sound, dance and writing; and to participate in a workshop with the dance education group Body Detour to perform an adaptation of Barrowland Ballet’s Wolves.

Let’s Talk About Diversity 

In partnership with the National Taiwan Science Education Center and National Museum of History, the NTCH is holding Let’s Talk About Diversity, a series of a dozen events aimed at children and parents. The events include interactive exhibitions, talks, and educational activities, all of which aim to promote diversity and a greater understanding of society and the natural world.
