Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS presents exciting concerts from April to June 2023
Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), located in the middle of the PETRONAS Twin Towers, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. A list of exciting concerts presenting music of all genres awaits you. DFP stays true to its mission to offer music to people from all walks of life.
First, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will present classical works by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff celebrating his 150th birthday on 1 and 2 April 2023. To be led by Japanese conductor Junichi Hirokami, the MPO will present two dazzling works; Symphony No.2 in E minor and Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor. The MPO will be collaborating with pianist Anna Fedorova; her ‘live’ recording of this Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto has reached 37 million views on YouTube and is highly acclaimed by the critics.

The MPO continues to stretch its versatility when it celebrates the music of legendary Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng on 15 April 2023. Themed Teresa Teng Tribute Concert 70th Anniversary, this concert will pay homage to the renowned singer through her classic hits. Teng’s music has transcended borders, cultural and language barriers. To be led by Francis Kan, the MPO will collaborate with vocalist Chen Jia who has spent a lifetime perfecting her tributes to Teng’s works. Chen’s excellent interpretation has led to her appointment as an official artist by the Teresa Teng Culture and Education Foundation.

The audience are in for a different musical treat when the MPO presents concerts themed Symphonic Anime on 28 April 2023 and 29 April 2023. In MPO’s fourth installment of this wildly popular Anime series, the audience will discover new and unforgettable gems with spellbinding textures and intense emotions. MPO Resident Conductor Naohisa Furusawa will helm these delightful showcases.
Next, the MPO will celebrate the festive Hari Raya with its audience on 6 May 2023. Under the baton of Ahmad Muriz Che Rose, the MPO will enthrall in an evening of evergreen raya classics with fresh symphonic interpretations that will evoke nostalgia and memories of yesteryears. This concert will feature veteran singers such as Datuk Hail Amir and Sanisah Huri, sharing the DFP stage with songstress Ziana Zain and vocalist Bob Yusof. A treat not to be missed by fans of Malay classics.

Singapore’s legendary rock artist Datuk Ramli Sarip will present a special concert themed Syair Timur on 13 May 2023. He will demonstrate his inimitable husky vocals through songs of traditional fusion backed by his talented musicians. This concert is a must for fans of this iconic artist who was a recipient of many prestigious accolades both in Singapore and Malaysia.

The MPO returns to DFP on 20 May 2023. MPO Concertmaster Peter Daniš will present Brahms’ gloriously epic violin concerto, a masterpiece of the Romantic era with intense symphonic power. Stanislav Kochanovsky will lead the MPO in a concert which will also feature Mozart’s formidable Symphony No.41 (nicknamed Jupiter), among others.

Movie soundtrack enthusiasts should not miss concerts themed The Music Of Star Wars on 27 and 28 May 2023. It will be a monumental celebration as the MPO presents symphonic highlights from the famed film series. MPO Resident Conductor Gerard Salonga will lead the orchestra in these fabulous music treats.

Fans of Malay rock band Exists should not miss this once-in-a-lifetime treat on 3 June 2023. The group will celebrate its 30th anniversary in showbusiness in a special concert down memory lane with a string of ballad hits.
Finally, presenter Alasdair Malloy will return to DFP in his collaborations with the MPO on 17 June 2023. Themed Family Film Favourites, this concert will delight audiences young and old; from the classic Beauty And The Beast to the sing-along Frozen and recent hit such as This Is Me (from The Greatest Showman). Not forgetting, there will be Disney quizzes in this celebration of films and music.
