2023/2024 The New National Theatre Tokyo Season 

The New National Theatre Tokyo (NNTT) is delighted to announce its 2023/2024 Season starting from 1 October 2023.  

New National Theatre Tokyo 2023/2024 Season

The 2023/2024 Opera season under Artistic Director, Ono Kazushi offers two new productions along with seven revivals. 

As this third pairing in our double bill series, the NNTT’s 2023/24 season will open with a new production of Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges. Under the baton of Numajiri Ryusuke and the direction of Aguni Jun, acclaimed singers including Chiara Isotton, Marianna Pizzolato, Chloé Briot and Saito Junko will perform in this double bill with the theme of the purest form of love between mother and child. 

The second new production of the season is Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, a co-production with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet and the Teatro Real Madrid. The production is conducted by Ono Kazushi and directed by world-renowned opera director Pierre Audi in collaboration with contemporary artist Anish Kapoor. The cast includes internationally acclaimed Verdi baritone Roberto Frontali, Italian bass Riccardo Zanellato, the talented Simone Alberghini, star soprano Irina Lungu and the brilliant tenor Luciano Ganci. 

One of the highlights of the 2023/2024 season revivals, Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, which caused a sensation in the 2010/2011 season under conductor Ono Kazushi and director David McVicar, returns to the NNTT for the first time in 13 years. The cast includes some of the most accomplished Wagnerian singers: Eva-Maria Westbroek, Torsten Kerl, Egils Silins, Wilhelm Schwinghammer, and Fujimura Mihoko. 

The NNTT’s repertoire will be staged with outstanding artists.

The 2023/2024 Ballet & Dance season under Artistic Director, Yoshida Miyako sees the returns of our beloved and exciting ballets from our repertoire.

The National Ballet of Japan (NBJ) opens its new season with a revival of Don Quixote, brimming with fun and vitality. This much-loved NNTT production choreographed by Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky, and directed by Alexei Fadeyechev was introduced to the NBJ in 1999. 

In November 2023, the NBJ will stage DANCE to the Future: Young NBJ GALA. DANCE to the Future is a series of programmes featuring artists of the NBJ. This time, young dancers will perform the classical pas de deux for the project for a performance looking toward the future and opening new possibilities. Nacho Duato’s Duende will be also staged.

The 2023/2024 Drama season under Artistic Director, Ogawa Eriko offers 4 ambitious productions 

The 2023/2024 Drama Season at the NNTT opens with Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure and All’s Well That Ends Well. The company that has presented Shakespeare’s history plays at the NNTT since 2009 will gather again for a new endeavour starting in the autumn of 2023. 

In December 2023, we will bring TOKYO ROSE, the first musical production for the sixth production from our Full Audition Project. This is a brand-new work, having premiered in the UK as recently as 2019. It tells the story of Iva Ikuko Toguri, an announcer during the Pacific War era known as Tokyo Rose. 

From April to July of 2024, we plan to unveil a new serial production in ten stories titled Dekalog, adapted from the ten drama television miniseries by Polish film director Krzysztof Kieslowski in the 1980s. Although each of the ten episodes is independent, the characters share the same housing block, making this a single spectacular story divided into ten episodes.
