2019 Summer Series at National Taichung Theater

Since its opening in 2016, the National Taichung Theater (NTT) has been developing a unique brand identity by setting up diverse programme series with exceptional works across various genres. This summer, the NTT presents world-acclaimed classics and fresh inspirations for musical-lovers, families and young generation.

Tendres Fragments de Cornelia Sno is a thought-provoking play directed by Jean-François Auguste and originally written by Loo Hui Phang. It’s a solo performance which explores and redefines the meaning of distinctiveness, and provides an opportunity for the audience to get to know more about Asperger syndrome through looking into the inner world of an Asperger’s teenager. In collaboration with Cie For Happy People & Co, this work has been translated to Chinese by the NTT and is set to have its Chinese version premiere, starring talented Taiwanese actor Tseng Chih-wei, in Taichung by the end of July.

Compagnie d’irque & fien from Belgium brings their signature production Carrousel des Moutons. Mixing music, magic, mime and stunts, this work has the simple directness of street theatre, the tender intimacy of a music box, and the utter power of a circus in its purest essence. Acclaimed as ”a show without words that will render you speechless”, it has been played in dozens of countries world-wide and praised as an all-time favorite.

Adapted from Taiwanese writer Wang Chen-ho’s novel, An Oxcart for Dowry is co-produced by Our Theatre, a grassroots theater company in Taiwan, and Ryuzanji Jimusho, a well-known Japanese theatre company. The play is infused with vibrant songs and dance moves. Scripted by Taiwanese playwright Lin Meng-huan and Lu Chih-chieh, this contemporary black comedy vividly portrays helplessness of the deprived locals in a humorous manner.

An Oxcart for Dowry

A musical directed and choreographed by internationally renowned choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, An American in Paris is also a stage-adaptation, based on the 1951 Academy Award-winning film of the same name. Featuring the classic tones of George Gershwin, it gracefully tells a love story set 50 years ago in the glorious City of Lights and the breath-taking night view of the Seine. Remarked by The Daily Express as ”a visual splendor that few musicals can match”, the NTT is presenting this spectacular musical for its Taiwan premiere in August.
