Baybeats, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay’s annual three-day alternative music festival returns for its 18th edition from 23 to 25 August 2019. The non-ticketed festival will take place at Singapore’s national performing arts centre and this year, music lovers can look forward to an exciting line-up that will feature a diverse range of alternative music acts, from Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and The Philippines.

The festival was launched by Esplanade in 2002 to showcase the indie-rock genre and to plug a gap in Singapore’s music scene, as such acts were not presented by commercial presenters at the time.

Over the years, Baybeats has evolved to meet the changing needs of Singapore’s music scene, as well as the changing definition of what constitutes alternative music. Now, music aficionados can look forward to a mind-blowing line-up over the festival’s three days. Beyond indie rock, Baybeats now features genres as diverse as death metal, dream pop and hip hop.

Each year, Esplanade also works with stalwarts of Singapore’s alternative music scene to present a slew of Baybeats Budding initiatives that help nurture young Singapore talent not only in music-making but also in other creative fields such as music journalism and gig photography.
