Freespace, Hong Kong’s new centre for contemporary performance and West Kowloon’s second major performing arts venue, comes into operation mid-June. Opening season includes a stellar line-up of dance, theatre and music programmes.

Choreographic Landscapes
8 – 12 Jun

In this five-day professional workshop, French choreographer Christian Rizzo invites participants to explore choreographic languages and compositions, and the relationship between movement, performance and space. Before the workshop, Rizzo also leads a public discussion on his work and the importance of emptiness as a space for imagination.

From a True Story – Christian Rizzo

Hong Kong debut of French choreographer Christian Rizzo’s acclaimed dance work, From a True Story incorporates eight male dancers and two live drummers to blend folkloric gesture and formal contemporary movement with repetitive, earthy, tribal rhythms, creating a work that strikes at the core of human experience.

A Dream Like a Dream

Conceived by acclaimed theatre director Stan Lai, A Dream Like a Dream is one of the most talked about Chinese-language theatrical innovations. With an eight-hour duration, four-sided stage and revolving seating design, the play presents a dreamlike journey through a life.

Edward Lam Dance Theatre – Art School Musical
3 – 13 Oct

This October, Art School Musical returns to Hong Kong for a fourth restaging specially designed for The Box at Freespace. Featuring 18 original songs, and a cast from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, the plot centres around three young students and their struggle to find meaning in love, art and life.

What is Stage: Space as Poetry
1 Jul – 27 Sep

This September, renowned German stage and costume designer Anna Viebrock joins us for a public seminar and five-day artist workshop on how stage design goes beyond space. In preparation for the workshop, Edward Lam introduces Viebrock’s work with a public talk and series of professional screenings exploring the aesthetics of some of her most important opera and stage productions.

Freespace Livehouse
Summer 2019

The Freespace Livehouse is a small bar and performance space presenting music from Hong Kong and around the world. As well as regular showcases highlighting the best of the local and international music scene, the Livehouse also hosts workshops, film screenings and cultural events, and free outdoor music in the Art Park.

Freespace Jazz Fest
9 – 10 Nov

This November, Freespace Jazz Fest brings together a stellar line-up of local and international jazz and world music artists for a full weekend of indoor and outdoor performances. The diverse programme also includes jazz-infused performances around the Art Park by our partner Hong Kong Ballet.

CCDC in Residence
13 – 24 Nov

This November, to mark the start of our new three-year CCDC in Residence programme, Freespace partners with CCDC to present Re-Mark and Almost 55 – two major dance performances in this year’s City Contemporary Dance Festival.

Rimini Protokoll – 100% Hong Kong
13 – 15 Dec

Part theatre, part reality, 100% Hong Kong brings together 100 Hong Kong citizens live on stage. Responding to 100 questions – as performers, as people, as percentage points – they enact a series of ever-changing statistical groupings and create a thought-provoking living, breathing portrait of Hong Kong.

HK Ballet in Residence
6 – 9 Feb 2020

Hong Kong Ballet take over our new venue with a four-day programme of indoor and outdoor ballet experiences for audiences of all ages. Events include the second edition of Hong Kong Cool: Ballet x Fashion and Yuri Ng’s Ballet Classics for Children: The Sleeping Beauty.

Company Wayne McGregor – Autobiography
10 – 12 Jan 2020

Illuminated by the sequencing of McGregor’s own genome, Autobiography is a dance portrait on the body as archive. Like life, each performance unfolds uniquely in a continuous reimagining, with the order of the dance pieces algorithmically assembled from a collection of 23 choreographic volumes. Asian premiere.

Ryuichi Sakamoto feat. Shiro Takatani: dis·play
3 – 4 Apr 2020

Ryuichi Sakamoto returns to Hong Kong for the first time in more than a decade with his new performance dis·play, combining music from his 2017 album async and visual compositions from long-time collaborator Shiro Takatani. Full programme details will be posted in January 2020.

ON VIEW: Panorama
9 – 19 Apr 2020

Sydney-based choreographer, filmmaker and artist Sue Healey partners with performers from Hong Kong, Japan and Australia to present a cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural production combining live dance performances, film installations and exhibitions. Joining the project from Hong Kong are dance artists Mui Cheuk-yin and Joseph Lee, and cinematographer Maurice Lai.
