This November, Freespace Jazz Fest returns to West Kowloon with a programme of music and art events celebrating the innovation and diversity of one of the world’s most popular forms of music.

Highlight ticketed events include Ted Lo and Eugene Pao – an evening of fusion, classics and original compositions by local jazz greats Pao and Lo, joined on stage by a line-up of friends and star guests. There’s also Angelita Li Sings Billie Holiday – Feat. Patrick Lui Jazz Orchestra– with songs and stories honouring the life and legacy of the US jazz diva performed by Angelita Li and Patrick Lui and his orchestra, and the experimental collaboration Jazz Imaginarium – a unique, multisensory immersive experience with musicians and visual artists creating a black box installation with improvised sound and imagery.

Free events include the Experimental Jazz Lab, with three sessions featuring live and online interactive collaborations between artists in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Switzerland, plus live shows by local artists at Lau Bak Livehouse – just grab a drink or a meal and enjoy the music.
Throughout the weekend, there is also an exciting programme of music, art events and workshops around Freespace.

The Experimental Chinese Opera Festival highlights original productions and new perspectives on Chinese opera. This year, adjusting our original programme around the on-going travel restrictions, we present performances of two Xiqu Centre-produced experimental Cantonese opera works – Farewell My Concubine (New Adaptation) in November 2020 and the Hong Kong premiere of Wenguang Explores the Valley in October 2020 – plus a specially curated series of free Creative Sharing Sessions with creators and performers from four regional troupes: Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, Shanghai Yue Opera Group, Jin Liansheng Gaojia Opera Troupe of Xiamen City and Contemporary Legend Theatre.

Join us live online for the Creative Sharing Sessions in October and November 2020, where troupes discuss their work and offer insight into some of the productions we will present in the near future. The sessions explore curatorial perspectives, regional genres, creative choices and performance styles, include video excerpts from highlighted works, and offer audiences the chance to exchange ideas with the artists and experts.
