Saburo Teshigawara’s new dance performance Rashomon

Artistic director and internationally acclaimed dancer take on the challenge of Japanese literature!  
Saburo Teshigawara’s new dance performance Rashomon 

Saburo Teshigawara‘s new dance performance Rashomon will take place on 11 August in the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater Main Hall. 

This performance is composed, directed and choreographed by the theatre’s artistic director Saburo Teshigawara. It will be the world premiere of the work, which is being created together with internationally active dancers. The performance is based on the short story Rashomon by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. 

The story is set in Kyoto during the Heian period (794-1185), when Rashomon is destroyed by famine and an earthquake. A man loses his job, then meets an old woman who removes dead people’s hair to make wigs and decides to go against his morals and become a thief. The intersection of the good and evil ideas of this character is a theme that can be understood by many today. Teshigawara focused on the language of this literary work and incorporated the legend of the Devil of Rashomon into his creation. 

The three performers are Saburo Teshigawara, Rihoko Sato, and Alexandre Riabko. Sato, who has worked with Teshigawara for many years and has recently had remarkable success as a choreographer and has taken on the role of artistic collaborator. Riabko has a career of more than 20 years with the Hamburg Ballet and his advanced dance and performance skills have attracted many dance fans over the years.
