Saburo Teshigawara, Artistic Director of the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater will present his choreographic dance Matasaburo of the Wind

Saburo Teshigawara, Artistic Director of the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater will present his choreographic dance Matasaburo of the Wind on 3 – 4 September at the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater Main Theatre. Our Artistic Director Saburo Teshigawara, who is an internationally active choreographer and dancer, created and performed this dance performance in 2021 together with ballet experts with links to Aichi. The performance will be repeated as part of efforts to develop local young dancers, taking advantage of the thriving dance scene in the region.

Saburo Teshigawara, who is responsible for the production, choreography, art, costumes, lighting design, and music editing of this performance, is active in Japan and abroad. In 2020, he presented a series commemorating his inauguration as Artistic Director (all three performances were sold out), and in 2021 he presented repeated performances of Matasaburo of the Wind and Rashomon. He also created and performed works with his own dance company KARAS and was the first Japanese citizen to win the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in the dance category of the Venice Biennale 2022. The performance features more than a dozen performers, including some of the dancers who appeared last year, new dancers of ages ranging from their teens to their thirties, and artistic collaborator Rihoko Sato. An audition workshop for new performers was held in March this year, and the dancers have been rehearsing intensively under the guidance of Teshigawara.

Kenji Miyazawa’s story, Matasaburo the Wind Imp begins when a transfer student comes to a small school in the mountains. At first, the local children are confused by this new student but they soon become friends. Like the seasons that transition from summer to autumn, the children are also depicted as they grow and change. We hope you will enjoy this second season of Matasaburo of the Wind by Teshigawara and the young dancers, featuring dance that is in perfect harmony with the story narrated by Rihoko Sato.
