Andris Nelsons Conducts Boston Symphony Orchestra – Japan Tour 2022

Suntory Hall presents a three-concert programme of Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in November 2022 as part of the orchestra’s six-concert Japan Tour. This will be the first tour to Japan by an U.S. symphony orchestra since the pandemic.

Founded in 1881, the Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the leading orchestral organisations in the United States and is recognised worldwide for its annual concert series in Boston’s Symphony Hall, summer residency at Tanglewood in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, and versatile performances by the Boston Pops Orchestra, as well as its wide-ranging educational programs, including the Tanglewood Music Centre, the BSO’s acclaimed summer music academy for advanced musical studies.

Internationally acclaimed Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons has been at the helm since 2014 and has established a strong bond with the orchestra. They have already won several Grammy Awards (2016, 2017, 2019) for their ongoing recordings of Shostakovich’s complete symphonies. This is an exciting opportunity to enjoy this world-class partnership.

In their concerts at Suntory Hall, Andris Nelsons and the BSO will showcase three different programmes: Mahler’s Mighty Symphony No. 6 (13 November), Suntory Hall Associate Artist, Dame Mitsuko Uchida as soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor” paired with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 (14 November), and Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Richard Strauss’s Eine Alpensinfonie in the final concert (15 November), preceded by American composer Caroline Shaw’s Punctum (Tokyo premiere of the orchestral version). Shaw is winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music and several Grammy Awards.

Furthermore, as an orchestra dedicated to providing high level educational and training programmes, including a Trumpet Master Class for Young Musicians led by a BSO member, BSO shares the spirit of Suntory Hall’s education and outreach aims.

During the tour, the orchestra will also give performances at the Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall (9 November), Kyoto Concert Hall (10 November), and Osaka Festival Hall (11 November).
