Upcoming Programmes at West Kowloon Cultural District Authority

Creative Tomorrow

Creative Tomorrow, exclusively sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, is a major, first of its kind arts-tech festival in the District and a key highlight of the Performing Arts Season 2022-2023. Where technology meets transformative programming in a display of creativity, the festival embodies xiqu, theatre, music, dance, outdoors and indoors installations to provide new and exciting experience to artists and audiences alike.

In February and March 2023, SerendiCity, the innovative featured programme of Creative Tomorrow, will take place both indoors and outdoors around the District. Highlights include a series of experimental installations, games and workshops curated by local media art curator and researcher Kyle Chung. Exciting programmes of SerendiCity include Borealis by Swiss artist Dan Acher who will bring the first-ever vibrant recreation of the Northern Lights to Hong Kong; petrichor, a constantly changing, dream-like world of projections, soundscapes, and artificial mist by German artist Robert Seidel; and Distributive intelligence | A group mind, an immersive, kinetic light installation by Swiss artist Lukas Truniger. In addition, Hong Kong media artist Chilai Howard will present The Orchestra of Temple Street – a creative visualisation of crowd-sourced streetscape data exploring and reinventing the inherent impression of Temple Street while local artist Enoch Cheng will curate Views from the Grand View Garden (working title), taking elements from Xiqu’s stylised body and costumes to reinterpret classical characters and exploring the complexity of human’s psychology with modern science and language.

Wayson Poon: PHONATE

In February 2023, West Kowloon will present Wayson Poon: PHONATE – a thought-provoking piece reflecting the shared poetry and consciousness of human beings and human bodies.

Wayson Poon’s latest work PHONATE explores the dynamics of power, control and communal strength that occur between choreographer, dancers and audience. Pushing the limitations of their bodies, the dancers transform the air of a minimalist performance space into audible energy. As the rhythms of their breath compete and synchronise, a state of involuntary connection develops and the audience become one with the dancers, inhaling and exhaling in time.

Poon’s choreography is informed by Taoist notions of Qi and the movement and meditation practices Liquid Body and 5Rhythms. The research and development of this work was supported by Freespace, Dance Info Finland, Zodiak – Center for New Dance and Dance House Helsinki through the residency exchange project Creative Meeting Point: Hong Kong x Finland (2016–2018).

Presence

In March 2023, Freespace will present Presence, the third creation from the Future of Performance series.

An original interactive online experience, Presence explores the performance potential of telepresence techniques through live performance, installation, game control programming and first-person game play.

Participating remotely through a specially developed online platform, the audience are “telepresent” in the performance through camera-equipped robotic cars – self-operated physical avatars – that enable them to see, hear and interact in real time with real performers in a real space.
