A new dance work “Waltz” by Saburo Teshigawara, Artistic Director of Aichi Prefectural Art Theater

A world premiere dance to be performed after Teshigawara being honoured as Person of Cultural Merit and awarded Golden Lion Venice Biennale. 

A new dance work, Waltz by Saburo Teshigawara, Artistic Director of Aichi Prefectural Art Theater, will be premiered on 16 and 17 July in the main theatre. 

In 2020, Saburo Teshigawara has directed, choreographed, and performed in three performances as the series commemorating his new position.  In 2021, he created his version of Rashomon based on Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s novel, and in 2022, Dance Concert, a collaborative performance of dance and music. He also created Matasaburo of the Wind based on Kenji Miyagawa’s novel with young dancers in the Tokai region to assist the development of new talents. 

In 2022, he was honoured as Person of Cultural Merit by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan and received the Venice Biennale Golden Lion, further increasing his reputation both in Japan and abroad. 

He will direct and choreograph Waltz with 3 dancers including himself – Rihoko Sato who has been the artistic collaborator in recent years, and Javier Ara Sauco, a native of Spain who was a member of Hessisches Staatsballett (Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and Staatstheater Darmstadt, Germany) from 2018 to 2021, and now is a freelance choreographer in Europe.
