Discover the SINGAPO人 treasures at Cultural Extravaganza 2024

Cultural Extravaganza returns this May! Based on the theme (Re)presenting Our SINGAPO人 Treasures, Cultural Extravaganza 2024 brings our distinctive SINGAPO人 culture in the spotlight. We have an exciting lineup of ten programmes comprising eight performances and two exhibitions by renowned local arts groups.  

Come enjoy and celebrate local Chinese treasures from 8 May – 30 Jun this year!  

Six Highlights that you shouldn’t miss!

The Pawned Wife (8 – 12 May) 
This is an evolutionary Teochew opera performed by Nam Hwa Opera that adapts a traditional artform to contemporary theatre. The story is about a wife in a poor rural family in China who had to be pawned for three years in exchange for money to treat their sick son. English and Chinese surtitles will be provided so don’t worry if you don’t understand the Teochew dialect.

A Jazzy Celebration of Chinese Songs 2024 (18 – 19 May) 
Featuring renowned English and Cantonese pop singer Teresa Carpio, Cantonese singer Wysom Wong and Singaporean singer-songwriter Serene Koong, audiences will be treated to an evening of jazzy renditions of well-loved Chinese evergreens and modern-classic songs performed by the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra.

The Singaporean Composers Series (25 – 26 May) 
In celebration of the TENG Ensemble’s 20th anniversary, the concert will feature ten commissioned works by 20 Singaporean creatives including Cultural Medallion recipient Dr Kelly Tang, 13-year-old musical genius Nathanael Koh, veteran music producer George Leong, Jazz maestro Chok Kerong, esteemed music producer Evan Low, National Day Parade 2024 Music Director Bang Wenfu and more.

Disappearing Series…: Childhood Melodies of Yesteryears (1 Jun) 
Reviving dialect nursery rhymes and iconic Singapore folk songs from Chinese, Malay, and Indian with a modern twist with Ding Yi Music Company! Don’t miss the chance to be part of this immersive experience, where the past and present harmonise in a celebration of Singapore’s musical diversity.

Essentially Macbeth (15 & 16 Jun) 
Is art essential? Produced by NUS Centre for the Arts, Essentially Macbeth is a multi-disciplinary production of theatre and Chinese orchestra that explores the meaning and purpose of the arts in our lives. The story is about a group of ex-NUS drama club members who come together to stage Macbeth in order to rekindle their passion for the arts they felt 10 years ago. By coming back to theatre, they find themselves re-examining their life choices and asking the same question they had before – what is the meaning and purpose of the arts?

Treasures of Our Schools Exhibition (31 May – 30 Jun) 
Get a first-hand look at little-seen works by renowned artists from the collections of local schools. Comprising important names such as Chen Wen Hsi, Liu Kang and Chua Ek Kay. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to appreciate the unique styles of these artists and the evolution of Singapore art from the 1950s to the present day. Many of these works are seldom seen by the public. It is also the first time that these collections have been brought together for a joint showcase
