David Bintley’s Aladdin on OperaVision

Aladdin

David Bintley’s Aladdin by the National Ballet of Japan, the grand finale of the 2023/2024 season, is now available for streaming on OperaVision and NNTT Stream until 20 March 2025. This release marks the first time a performance by the National Ballet of Japan has been featured on OperaVision.

David Bintley’s Aladdin is a full-length ballet choreographed by former Artistic Director Sir David Bintley for the National Ballet of Japan at the New National Theatre Tokyo in 2008. Since its premiere, this production has captivated audiences with its seamless blend of entertainment and artistry. Praised globally, Aladdin has been performed by renowned companies such as the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Houston Ballet, earning its place as one of David Bintley’s signature works.

The ballet features Carl Davis’s accessible music, which enhances the captivating choreography and brings to life enchanting scenes such as the magical flying carpet and the dramatic emergence of the Djinn from the lamp. While the story of Aladdin is widely recognised in Japan as an Arabian tale, its origins in Arabian Nights are set in China. This production reimagines Aladdin as a Chinese descendant living in Old Arabia, beautifully integrating Chinese cultural elements, including Lion and Dragon dances, into the Arabian setting.

Audiences are invited to experience the grandeur of this ballet, with its diverse and character-rich dances. Highlights include the Pas de deux between Aladdin and the Princess, the dazzling divertissements of the jewels in the cave scene, and the dynamic performances of the Djinn and his entourage.

The National Ballet of Japan is set to make its UK debut at the Royal Opera House in London in July 2025, generously supported by Kinoshita Group Co., Ltd. The company will present five performances of Giselle in a highly acclaimed production by Artistic Director Miyako Yoshida, who was a Principal Dancer with The Royal Ballet for 16 years. In collaboration with award-winning British choreographer Alastair Marriott and designer Dick Bird, Yoshida’s Giselle will also be performed in Tokyo in April 2025 before its London tour.
