Chinese Opera Festival 2025

From 21 Jun – 26 Jul, Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) and National Arts Council (NAC) jointly present the inaugural Chinese Opera Festival 2025 as a celebration of one of Singapore’s traditional performing artforms.

The festival features five local Chinese opera troupes, each performing in a different dialect, and they are Chinese Opera Studio (Teochew), Chinese Opera Ensemble (Hainanese), OperaWorks (Singapore) (Cantonese), Tian Yun Beijing Opera Society (Peking), and Tang Renaissance (Yue). This collaboration not only celebrates the diversity of Chinese opera in Singapore but also provides vital support for local Chinese opera groups to develop their capabilities, facilitate their artistic growth and cultivate a wider audience.

In addition, a series of fringe activities will be available at SCCC including interactive Chinese opera movement workshops by Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award (Organisation) 2023 recipient Nam Hwa Opera, and practitioner talks featuring respected artists like Cultural Medallion recipient Joanna Wong and The Stewards of Intangible Cultural Heritage Award recipient Cai Bixia.

SG, You’ve Got Mail Exhibition

As part of SCCC’s SG60* partnership projects, SCCC will collaborate with Siaw-Tao Chinese Seal Carving, Calligraphy & Painting Society to co-present an exhibition that will feature 60 new works created by the society’s artists to congratulate and convey well-wishes to Singapore on its 60th birthday.

These letters will be expressed through traditional art forms such as ink painting, calligraphy, and seal carving, seamlessly blending the elegance of classical letter writing with the creativity of modern postcards – each serving as a personal artistic tribute to the nation.

The exhibition space, thoughtfully designed by Siaw-Tao member Tan Wei Ming, will transform the display panels into a layered arrangement of envelopes to evoke the warmth of handwritten words and inspire visitors to reconnect with the art of letter writing as a meaningful way to express emotions and strengthen personal connections.

*SG60 is a national movement to mark Singapore’s 60th anniversary in 2025.

“Culture on Wheels” Travelling Trunks

SCCC will be launching their first travelling trunks Culture on Wheels in Jul. Specially curated for schools, these interactive trunks will tour primary schools across the island from Jul 2025 to Dec 2027, offering students and educators an engaging introduction to various aspects of local Chinese culture – from traditional festivals to intangible cultural heritage and beyond.

The travelling trunks are curated based on four themes: Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese Opera, and Lion Dance. Each trunk features educational resources and a diverse range of interactive handling objects. These hands-on materials encourage students to touch, explore, and engage directly with handling objects, deepening their understanding through sensory and experiential learning.

Educators can also tap into these resources to create dynamic, memorable, and impactful classroom experiences. Through creative activities such as role-playing, storytelling, games, and guided exploration, students can immerse themselves in the rich traditions of Singapore Chinese culture in a fun and meaningful way.
