Weiwuying: a series of world-class performances this season

Celebration of Contemporary Novelty at Weiwuying’s 2026 International Music Festival, Followed by Kyōgen Master Mansai NOMURA’s 3rd visit to Taiwan

Weiwuying put on a series of world-class performances this season: the 2026 Weiwuying International Music Festival and a show of kyōgen(a form of Japanese comic theater) by Mansai NOMURA, a master of the genre. These events showcase Weiwuying’s effort in promoting contemporary creation while furthering cross cultural dialogue.

Artistic Director of WIMF, Unsuk CHIN

One of today’s most iconic music events in Asia, the festival, steered by musical great Unsuk CHIN, will take place in April, continuing with its established spirit of linking the contemporary and the classic through a number of awe-inspiring performances.

The festival include premieres of contemporary works and homage to the classics with pieces by several of today’s world-class composers. A diverse selection of chamber music and symphonic ensembles will bring listeners through an exploration of new frontiers in 21st-century music. Aside from performances, as fostering young talent is also a major part of the festival, there will be masterclasses and workshops, where young musicians in the Asia-Pacific region may interact with top conductors and soloists.

In May 2026, Weiwuying welcomes back master Mansai Nomura for his third appearance, bridging the 600-year legacy of Kyogen, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, with cutting-edge stage technology. Unlike the solemn NohKyogen is a vibrant comedic form exploring human satire and profound daily observations. Nomura will perform his most iconic repertoire, utilising the unique acoustics of Weiwuying’s theatre to transform medieval physical mastery into a universal dialogue on modernising East Asian tradition. This performance offers a rare, intimate encounter with an ancient art form that remains strikingly relevant today.

The contemporary perspective of the festival and NOMURA’s re-creation of tradition, coupled with Weiwuying’s partnerships with such international heavyweights as the Public Theatre and the Lincoln Center in New York, have made Weiwuying a highlighted point on the global art map and are helping to nurture art in Taiwan.
