Aichi Prefectural Art Theater’s Independent Projects: Lineup for the 2022–2023 Season

Independent Projects for the 2022–2023 Season  

The Aichi Prefectural Art Theater will continue to bring a diverse range of engaging performing arts programmes to many people in the Aichi Prefecture and around Japan in the 2022–2023 season. 

Programmes to be held at the Main Theatre include: Kaze no Matasaburo (Matasaburo of the Wind), a dance performance produced, directed and choreographed by Art Director Saburo Teshigawara, which was also held last season; Möbius, a spectacular physical and acrobatic show created by a contemporary French circus troupe; and Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci, romantic and tragic operas co-produced by the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater and the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. Of these, Kaze no Matasaburo is performed by young dancers associated with Aichi Prefecture and other parts of the Tokai region, who passed the audition and have received dance lessons from Teshigawara. Designed to enhance the skills of individual dancers and stimulate the local dance scene, this performance will captivate the audience.

Programmes for the Concert Hall include: Tenjo no Niwa (Celestial Garden), a dance and live music performance featuring Saburo Teshigawara as a dancer; and Organ Memorial Concert – Pictures at an Exhibition, in commemoration of the centennial of the premiere of Maurice Ravel’s orchestral version.

Programmes to be held under the Summer Family Programme include: The Organ NIGHT & DAY 2022, a popular annual concert that allows the audience to learn the basics of organ music; The Princess and the Pea, a performance based on Andersen’s fairy tale given by a Norwegian dance company; and various other fun family programmes, including those traveling around Aichi Prefecture. 

The year-long Mini Theatre Selection programmes scheduled for the 2022–2023 season are: a collaborative project to be held jointly with Dance Base Yokohama, an organisation engaged in creating a professional dance environment and nurturing creators; and the staging of Lynch, a drama that won the Grand Prize in the 20th AAF Drama Award. The AAF Drama Award was established to explore the possibilities of drama, with the Grand Prize-winning drama set to be staged at the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater. 

In addition, we will organise admission-free programmes at the Concert Hall to garner public interest for the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater, while continuing efforts to familiarise performing arts to broaden the audience base and foster both staff and artists in the performing arts.
